Distinguished and Famous people from Tuncurry
⚓ John and Ernest Wright
John Wright established a sawmill and shipbuilding operation at Tuncurry after arriving in 1875, with the waterfront yard becoming a centre of local employment and trade. Vessels carried timber and other cargo along the coast, linking the settlement with larger markets. Following his death in 1910, son Ernest continued the business as E. Wright and Son. The yard produced vessels including Narani, Wallamba and Uralba before operations ended in the 1950s. John Wright Park now occupies part of the former industrial waterfront. The open space preserves the family name where timber, ship construction and working boats once dominated the scene.
🌉 Sir John Holland
John Holland's construction company built the bridge joining Forster and Tuncurry, completing the project in 1959. The crossing became a major local landmark and a practical link between the two settlements. Holland's wider engineering enterprise had begun modestly in 1949 before expanding into major Australian construction work. His connection with the twin towns is a specific professional project, remembered through both the bridge and the park carrying his name on the Forster side. Across the water, John Wright Park recalls a different period of local industry, giving the crossing a historical name at either end.
