Tuncurry is a small coastal town located in the Mid North Coast region of New South Wales, Australia. The town has a rich local history that dates back to the early 1800s. The region was first inhabited by the Worimi people, who lived as coastal and riverine hunters and gatherers. They named the area "Tuncurry" which is believed to mean "plenty of fish" in their language.

European settlement began in the 1820s when the Australian Agricultural Company established a farming and grazing station in the region. The company named the station 'Tuncurry' after the indigenous word for the area. In the late 1800s, the town began to thrive as a centre for fishing and oyster farming. The Tuncurry oyster industry became renowned for producing some of the finest oysters in the country, and by the early 1900s, the industry was booming. In the same period, the timber industry also became significant in the town. With the establishment of a timber mill, the region became a hub for forestry activities.

During World War II, the town played a significant role as a base for the US Army. The American forces established a base in Tuncurry in 1942, and the town became a major centre for military activities. The town was also used as a refuelling point for the Navy, and the region's port facilities were expanded to cater to the increased demand.

After the war, Tuncurry began to grow and develop as a popular tourist destination. The town's beautiful beaches, excellent fishing and water sports activities made it an ideal holiday spot. The opening of the Forster-Tuncurry bridge in 1959 made the town more accessible, and this led to an increase in tourism and population growth.

Today, Tuncurry is a thriving town with a population of approximately 5,000 people. The town's economy is driven by tourism, oyster farming, timber, and fishing. Tuncurry remains a popular holiday destination for visitors seeking a relaxing coastal experience. The town's pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and water sports activities attract visitors from across the country and around the world.

Overall, Tuncurry's rich local history and natural beauty make it a great place to visit and explore. The town has preserved much of its history by providing access to historical sites, landmarks, and museums. Besides, the town hosts many events and festivals throughout the year, which celebrate the region's history, culture, and natural beauty.
